Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony noted the importance of chess as a national sport while pointing out that the game now forms a part of the disciplines of the Inter-Guiana Games.
The Minister was at the time delivering the keynote address at the opening of the Seven Seas National Chess Championship at the Ocean Spray Hotel Kitty, yesterday.
Mr. Anthony noted that some of the players participating in the tournament have recently acquired international ratings and could be an inspiration to the other non rated players aspiring for similar accomplishments.
The Minister is encouraging countrywide participation of the sport and urged the current players to work assiduously in their endeavor to increase interest in the sport.
Eight players, all with winning aspirations, will compete for honours in the tournament which started yesterday and culminates on Sunday 28 November.
Ron Motilall, current junior champion, is the lone junior playing in the senior league and has already signaled his ambitions of transferring his good fortunes to a higher level.
He will have to be at his best if he is to prevail against such players as David and Taffin Khan, Learie Webster, Errol Tiwari, Kriskal Persaud, Frankie Farley, and Ryan Singh all just as determined as he to cart off the spoils.
Meanwhile, Pharmaceutical Manager (Geddes Grant), June-Ann Eastman attended the opening ceremony and wished the players well. She further reiterated her company’s commitment to the development of the sport. Geddes Grant is the main sponsor of the tournament under the Seven Seas brand.
Reigning champion, Wendell Meusa, became ineligible to defend his title following unproven public allegations uttered earlier this year against the Guyana Chess Federation. In a letter to Meusa in May, the Federation asked him to prove his allegations or, alternatively, apologize for his remarks.
He did neither resulting in a six-month suspension which ends sometime next month.
The championship will be played in a double round robin format event consisting of 14 rounds. Results of yesterday’s matches will appear in a subsequent edition.
