Head Coach of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover believes that the game against Guatemala will serve as a high-quality test for the Guyana.
The two countries will clash on Wednesday from 19:30hrs at the Kennesaw State University Soccer Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia.
While the long standing Guyanese coach does not know much about the Guatemalans who are below Guyana in the FIFA rankings, he said they will not be underestimating their opponents.
“This game will be a good test for us, since it will be the first time in many years we are playing a team at this level. We do not know anything about the team, but will go into the game and look to give a good performance and get a good result.”
Dover, who has guided Guyana to the finals of the 2010 Digicel Caribbean Cup set for Martinique later this month also said that the game has come at an opportune moment for his charges.
“The fact that Jamaica is in our group in the Digicel Caribbean Cup finals means this game came at the right time for us; we will be able to measure ourselves to know how close we are to Jamaica and it is very good exposure for this team that has done us proud so far this year.”
The England based players were expected to arrive in Atlanta yesterday while the Guyanese based players and officials will arrive tomorrow.
A welcome reception/dinner is planned for Tuesday at the Agape Restaurant & Christian Entertainment, 6420 Old Hillandale Drive, Lithonia, GA 30058.
Meanwhile, Coordinator Colin Baker has stated that the response from Guyanese in the USA has been very encouraging with most people eager to get to the game to see their National team live.
He did note that it will be a bit difficult for some of them given the fact that the game is being played in the middle of the week.
“Everyone has been excited to hear the full national team will be in the USA playing a big game against a team like Guatemala.
Persons are trying to work out how to get to the game looking at the possibilities of bus excursions and such like.”
Baker also disclosed that the players will be available for autographs and photo opportunities after the game.
Arrangements are being put in place to stream the game on the internet for persons who cannot be there.
