Fire suspected to be electrical in nature, around 01:00 hrs yesterday completely destroyed a two-storey wood and concrete building situated at Track W Plantation Caracas (at the end of Smythfield.)
The building which is owned by William Leung, 65, of Pitt Street, New Amsterdam, supported a house above a furniture manufacturing establishment. The inferno resulted in several millions of dollars in losses.
According to supervisor of the furniture establishment, Muniram Tarchand, who also lives on Pitt Street, in the same building as the owner, he received a call from the security guard that smoke was emanating from the building.
He and the owner immediately raced to the scene. Upon arrival, they were greeted with smoke coming from the inner portion of the lower flat of the building which housed the furniture establishment. They immediately summoned the fire service, which arrived promptly.
In the meantime, they had opened the door and noticed that the fire was running along the electrical wires. They tried to form a bucket brigade, but the smoke by then was too much.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the scene, Leung had just left for home, having been at the location for the entire day.
Tarchand told this publication that they are specialised in making panel doors, windows and moldings. They have been in the business for years and employ six staff. They have been at that location now for over six years.
He said that their losses run into several millions including lattes, planes, saws, drills and a number of small hand and electrical tools. The upstairs is used as a living quarters and was completely furnished.
The fire service responded promptly and did a good job according to the man. The fire service and police are investigating.
