President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Colin Bynoe and Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh presented quality water bottles that were sent in from the United Kingdom to 1700 athletes from the 16 Districts at the National Schools Championships.
The donation was from the Guyana United Kingdom Sports Development Association (GUSDA) to facilitate a more harmonious relationship and promote the annual event.
The GUSDA has had lots of involvement in local sport since being founded in 1995.
During the last 15 years, its prime purpose has been to assist in the development of sports in and out of Guyana, and of Guyanese in the United Kingdom. The bottles will assist in the rehydration process of the athletes that competed for four gruelling days.
Some of the aims and objectives of the GUSDA is to assist in the development and participation of sports in Guyana at local and regional levels; to assist in the development of individuals and teams who have the potential to represent Guyana at an international level; to provide financial or technical support, as deemed appropriate, in developing such individuals or teams; to provide equipment or facilities that will contribute to the development and participation of sports in Guyana; to form links with individuals and agencies in Guyana, the UK and Internationally that have similar aims and/or can contribute to our aims and objectives; to raise funds through a range of social and recreational activities, (as deemed appropriate and permitted by the Executive Committee), to achieve our objectives; to promote participation in sports and recreation for Guyanese (and friends of Guyanese) in the UK through suitable activities; helping to keep UK-based Guyanese informed about developments and achievements of Guyanese in the sporting arena through newsletters, ethnic media etc; to assist in any other humanitarian cause that meets the ethos of the organisation, e.g. to contribute to the health or welfare of individual(s) in need.
Below is the full statement the GUSDA issued on the National Schools’ Championships:
“The GUSDA is pleased to be able to support the 50th Anniversary of the National Schools’ Championships with a donation of some 1700 high quality water bottles.
It is envisaged that this material contribution will enable those children competing to remain hydrated and highlight the importance of good nutrition in maximising their performances.
Additionally, the GUSDA would hope to increase awareness, among budding athletes, of all sporting genres in Guyana, that it has some degree of support in contributing to their development towards them being able to compete at the highest level.”
