– Alpha also through
By Rawle Welch
Goal-hungry Devon Forde produced a stunning performance, hammering in a helmet-trick for Sunburst Camptown, who defeated a spirited, but slightly outclassed Victoria Kings 4-2 to book a place in the semi-finals of this year’s NaMilCo Football Festival which continued on Thursday night, at the Tucville ground.
Forde was simply unstoppable as he exhibited too much pace and wizardry for the Kings defence en route to a fine display that now puts him in a good position to win the top goal-scorer award.
He netted in the 17th, 27th, 47th, and 90th minutes of play, while Victoria Kings response came from Bernard John in the 36th minute and Royston Morrison in the 38th.
In the first game of the double-header, Alpha United looked in impeccable form as they nonchalantly brushed aside New Amsterdam United 5-0 with Shawn Bishop (40th, 45th), Howard Lowe (8th), Solomon Austin (13th) and Andrew Murray (85th), the men on target.
The feature clash started out with both teams immediately on the offensive, but it was Kings that had the first opportunity to take the lead when a terrible interplay between two Camptown defenders resulted in the ball being intercepted, but John, stumbling among them disappointingly hit his effort way over the crossbar.
That miss was to be rued as Camptown shortly after grabbed the lead through Forde, who neatly punched in the ball after a goalmouth scrimmage.
He returned ten minutes later, bursting down the right flank, outrunning his markers to lash in from close range.
However, the East Coast unit fought back gallantly and managed to decrease the deficit by one when John made amends for his earlier lapse, once again stumbling between two defenders, before hitting a fierce left-foot shot into the far corner past the outstretched hands of the Camptown custodian.
With the momentum shifted, Kings got the equaliser two minutes later when Morrison found himself unmarked after a melee in the goal area and delivered a stinging shot into the back of the net.
However, Camptown regained their composure and seized the initiative once again and Forde netted two more goals to complete his tally that ensured that Camptown move into contention for a crack at the top prize of $500,000 compliments of NaMilCo.
Meanwhile, today is the commencement of semi-final action with Alpha United taking on Sunburst Camptown from 18:00 hrs and that will be followed by the clash between hosts Fruta Conquerors and Santos at 20:00 hrs.
These two encounters will be preceded by the game between East Coast and Georgetown females from 16:00 hrs.
