Father seeks justice almost two years after son’s death

Two years ago on September 21, 2008 around 21:30 hrs, a young man was run over by a motorcar on the Cornelia Ida (C.I) Public Road, West Coast Demerara. He lapsed into a coma and died 52 days later, on his mother’s birthday.
Twenty-six-year-old Shradhanand Sankar, who was a barber, was returning home after hanging out with a friend at a local bar “Caribbean Temptations” which is located at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, a village away.
His father, Sadhu Sankar, of 37 Cornelia Ida Pasture, told Kaieteur News on Thursday, last, that his family has received no compensation from the persons responsible for the death of his only son.
Sankar stated that his son had just stepped out of a car with a friend and was almost home when motorcar PKK 620 came ‘speeding’ towards the direction of Vreed-en-Hoop. According to witnesses and his son’s friend, the driver of the vehicle appeared to be under the influence of alcohol while operating the vehicle, which was “zigzagging” on the main road.
It then struck Shradhanand, who flung into the air and landed at the side of the road, while the friend sustained minor injuries.
The driver continued along his way, then stopped a short distance after passing his son. Sankar stated that public-spirited citizens rushed to the aid of his son, who was immediately taken to the hospital and admitted.
The distraught father claims that the driver, who was identified as Manoj Boodhoo, hailed from East Coast of Demerara and was an employee of Nalico/ Nafico in Georgetown. The vehicle which he was operating at the time of accident was the company’s vehicle.
Sankar explained that Boodhoo only made one appearance at court during the period of two years and for three consecutive times after such; he failed to present himself to court.
He stated that on Monday, last, he went to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court for the matter in question and when he asked the Prosecutor what the situation was, he was told to “stay outside and wait to see if the boy or his lawyer comes”.
The father is pleading with the relevant authorities and Government officials to assist so that his family can receive the justice they have been seeking, since it appears as if, the matter is of no importance or will be forgotten.
