Early Thursday morning around 07:00hrs the fire at Le Repentir dumpsite was finally became controlled by Government’s Chief Consulting Engineer, Walter Willis, and his team.
Willis explained that he had expected the fire to burn for about one week before it was controlled and eventually put out. However, with his hard-working team of dedicated officials, this was achieved early yesterday morning.
Willis stated that his team consisted of employees of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), Pooran Brothers and the Municipal Solid Waste Management department who all worked the entire evening before, into the morning hours, to out the fire.
He said that the GFS consisted of 10 firefighters with two fire tenders, and two “in-line” pumps, which were used to boost the pressure of the water. Four workers from Pooran Brothers assisted with two three-inch water pumps and one excavator while the Municipal Solid Waste Management department provided two pumps, one of which was a six-inch and one excavator with three employees to provide additional manpower.
Willis added that the job was completed much faster than expected especially because things were “better coordinated” and that the same will be executed ‘if’ or ‘when’ any fire breaks out again at the dump site.
