Led by contrasting centuries from Travis Dowlin and Leon Johnson, Demerara defeated host Essequibo by an innings and 38 runs in the Guyana Cricket Board Senior 4-day cricket competition yesterday at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground.
Resuming on their overnight 173-3 Demerara reached 281-3 in 68 overs before they declared at lunch on day two.
Dowlin who was unbeaten on 59 at the close of play on the first day batted beautifully to score an unbeaten 113, while Johnson who was overnight on 56 ended on 105 not out.
Essequibo in their second innings were off to a good start but Royan Federicks and Kenzo Baksh (19) were leg before to Amir Khan.
The host never recovered despite 23 from R. Federicks who was caught behind off Zaheer Mohamed, 25 from Dillon Heyliger and 24 from Kevon Boodie and were bowled out first after tea for 122 in 38.2 overs.
The Essequibians who dropped a few catches in the field showed little application in their second innings as Khan with 3-42 off 14.2 overs, Stephen Jacobs 2-28 off 8 overs, Mohamed 2-15 off 4 overs and Trevon Garraway 2-25 from 9 did the damage with the ball for the victors.
Essequibo will now take Berbice at Blairmont while Demerara will face the rest team at DCC.
Both matches start on Thursday. Manager of the Essequibo team Elroy Stephney said his team was not properly prepared for this match and he hopes to have at least 3 days of practise before the next game.
