Police display ‘softer side’ at cultural extravaganza
The Police Force’s Military Band and Joint Services Choir gave a grand performance, as did all those who participated.
Ranks of the Guyana Police Force left the audience at the National Cultural Centre without doubt that the organisation possesses a wealth of talent.
And while many may only associate the Police Force with law enforcement, those at the aforementioned venue on Wednesday night, were pleasantly surprised when the ‘softer side’ of the Force was revealed.
Among the appreciative audience of several hundred at the Force’s much anticipated “Cultural Extravaganza” were Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and wife, Minister of Labour, Manzoor Nadir; Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud; Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, Minister within the Ministry of Health, Bheri Ramsaran; Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best; and Director of Prisons Dale Erskine, who no doubt left the venue feeling satisfied.
The evening featured police ranks at their cultural best with performances that matched the more contemporary acts with a diverse programme of music, singing, dancing, poetry, skits, gymnastics and body building displays put together by the Police Director of Music and Culture Assistant Commissioner Cecil Bovell, DSM.
The entire audience was entertained in the relaxed atmosphere created by the high level and variety of performances – under the guidance of Master of Ceremonies, Mondale Smith – which were well received.
The Guyana Police Force Military Band, MS, along with the Police String Band, the Police Steel Orchestra, the Joint Services Choir and the Immigration Choir gave grand performances that kept patrons tapping their feet.
Led by superb renditions of “Flying without wings” by Special Constable 14197 Mark Ferdinand, and “Will you still love me tomorrow” by Lance Corporal 20108 Simone Isaacs, along with an excellent performance of “Saxo Loco” by Special Lance Corporal 12225 Roger Dyal on the saxophone, the audience was left in a general state of excitement.
The audience was also thrilled with the bodybuilding display by Corporal 18203 Randolph Morgan who earned the Best Overall Powerlifter Title at the IPF/NAPF Caribbean Island Power Lifting Championships in March of this year, and Lance Corporal 17534 Karel Mars who was recently adjudged Best Overall at the Guyana Amateur Power-lifting Federation’s National Championships.
Impressive supportive performances were rendered by the Indian Dance Company, the National School of Dance, the Felix Austin Police College Gymnasts, and popular entertainers Henry Rodney and Linden ‘Jumbie’ Jones.
The Police Force “Cultural Extravaganza” was intended to showcase the diverse talent available among members of the organisation while at the same time providing wholesome family entertainment with the support of members of the public
