On the back of a 5-wicket haul from West Indies ‘A team left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, Cellink Berbice yesterday dismissed the Rest team just before the close of the 2nd day of their GCB 4-day senior cricket match at Blairmount to take a 190-run first innings lead.
Permaul had 5-65 from 29.3 overs while debutant off-spinner Steven Latcha had 2-43 from 20 overs to help the home team to first innings points with two days remaining in the contest.
Wasim Haslim top-scored with 52 and Delbert Hicks made 40 for the visitors after Berbice were bowled out 34 minutes into the day’s play for 392.
Berbice resumed on 369-8 and Steven Latcha (1) was bowled by off-spinner Krisendat Ramoo. Test pacer Brandon Bess then had his stumps disturbed by Kellon Carmichael before he had scored to end the innings.
Permaul was unbeaten on 25 as Ramoo had 4-92 from 36 overs and Carmichael 4-54 from 15 for the Rest Team.
The visitors were off to a horrendous start in sultry conditions when Shemroy Barrington had his wicket disarranged by Esuan Crandon before the visitors had scored.
Ryan Ramdass and Skipper Gajanand Singh survived a testing few early overs from Esuan Crandon who produced lateral movement on a ‘graveyard dead’ track but by lunch they had progressed to 42-1.
Ramdass, who played his only Test against Sri Lanka in 2005, was unbeaten on 25 and Singh, who has represented both Demerara and Berbice in this competition, not out on 13.
After the interval both Permaul and Latcha got the ball to turn pass the edge and there was no shortage of vociferous appeals before Latcha captured his first wicket at this level when Singh, put down off Permaul on 13, was caught behind for 14 at 43-2.
Ramdass was soon beaten in the flight and bowled by Latcha as he advanced for a big drive. Ramdass made 26 and the Rest team had slipped to 44-3.
Haslim and the 18-year-old Foo revived the position by taking the score to 126-3 by Tea with positive but intelligent batting after they both received lives in the 2nd session. The 23-year-old Haslim was especially severe on Permaul while Foo, who began cautiously, played the supporting role.
Haslim swept Permaul for 4 and was quick to capitalize on the wide balls with forceful drives and back cuts through the off-side while the usually pugnacious Foo was content to take his time.
Foo should have been taken at short leg twice off consecutive balls from Narsingh Deonarine on 7 at 78-3 but Richard Ramdeen failed to hold the offerings.
A loose drive from Haslim off Latcha was put down by Chattergoon at gully with the batsman on 32 and the score 90 before Bess was reintroduced.
However, his ploy to bowl short on the docile pitch proved ineffective as both Haslim and Foo pulled the West Indies quickie for disdainful boundaries as the pair batted to Tea.
Both batsmen were quickly removed early in the final session. Foo, who made 33 from 107 minutes and 82 balls with 3 fours was caught behind off Royston Crandon at 129-4, while without addition to the score Haslim swept Permaul to deep backward square-leg. His 52 lasted 77 balls, 103 minutes and included 9 fours.
Dion Ferrier hit 3 fours in 18 before driving Permaul to cover at 160-6 while Delbert Hicks, just off a first division century for Rose Hall Town against Bermine, took the attack to the bowlers after being dropped by Latcha off his own bowling.
Ramoo (9) pushed forward to Deonarine and was taken at short leg at 185-7 before Hicks, who hit 5 fours in 40, was taken at point off Permaul at 197-8.
Raj Nanan (0) soon provided Permaul with his 4th wicket as the Rest team slipped to 197-9 and Carmichael (6) was caught at slip off Permaul as the innings ended.
Play on the penultimate day is set to start at 09:30hrs today and Berbice Skipper Royston Crandon told Kaieteur Sport that although his team can enforce the follow-on, they will access the situation this morning before making that decision.
