After dedicating some 35 years to the Public Service, Cheryl Scotland, who was dismissed some eight years ago from the High Court Registry, says the least she was looking forward to was for justice to take its course.
In August 2002, Scotland along with seven other employees of the Supreme Court Registry were dismissed from their post by the then Registrar, Sita Ramlal.
According to Scotland, in April of the same year, she along with the other employees filed a writ in the High Court, challenging the dismissal letter.
A few months later Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards ruled in favour of the workers, ordering that they be reinstated to their respective posts.
Scotland noted that the case was appealed, but once again she and her colleagues were vindicated.
She said that subsequently she was issued with a letter from the Public Service Commission informing her that she should report to the Region Three, Regional Office.
That letter again was challenged by Scotland and her lawyer. The matter was first heard in May of 2005. However, to date the matter has not been completed.
Scotland claims that every time she enquires about her case she is given “the royal runaround”.
Even while the second matter was ongoing in the court, Scotland said she received another letter from the Public Service Commission (PSC) informing her to return to her post at the Supreme Court.
However, while working there, the woman said she was told by her supervisor that they were not aware that she was reinstated.
She explained that she then went to the PSC to make enquires, and was told that a letter informing the court that she (Scotland) was to be reinstated at the Supreme Court was sent there.
“The people at the Public Service tell me that they send the letter, but Sita Ramlal send it back to them saying that she is not honouring it,”.
The woman lamented that today would make 35 years of her dedicating her services to the Public Service and opined that the least she should get in return is justice.
