Dr. Sheik Amir is the new chairman of the Guyana Medical Council. He replaces the former chairman, Dr. Galton Roberts, who was sworn in following the death of renowned gynecologist Dr M.Y Bacchus.
The newly sworn in Medical Council is expected to be faced with several challenges.
These include a recent spate of maternal deaths, as well as having to decide whether to revoke the licence of US-trained physician Dr. Vishwamintra Persaud, who was convicted in a US court in 2008 for a sexual offence against a minor.
In the past, the Council has revoked the licences of errant physicians, only to have the decisions overturned by the High Court.
