It’s here again. This year’s Diamond Mineral Water (DMW) International Hockey Festival was officially launched yesterday, at the Georgetown Cricket Club Pavilion.
In attendance at the launching were representatives of the Guyana Hockey Board led by its President Philip Fernandes, Treasurer Devin Munroe, DDL’s Marketing Director Sharda Vereen Chand, Digicel’s Public Relations & Events Manager Shonnet Moore and Ansa McAl’s PRO Dharshanie Yussuf and Nigel Worrell.
Fernandes, who made the initial remarks, informed that the tournament which carries a budget of over $3.5 million will once again benefit from overseas participation and will be played from December 2-5, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Festival according to the GHB Head is in its seventh year and could now be classified as a landmark event on the local and regional calendars.
Fernandes said that the success of the Festival has now placed it among the best tournaments in the Caribbean and one that attracts a wide cross section of teams.
He disclosed that the GHB is indeed happy to have DDL on board once again, adding that they’ve been the major sponsor of the event since its inception in 2004.
“Diamond Mineral Water has become a mainstay beverage in hockey and the tournament rests on the tongues of players across the region for its reputation of good quality hockey and enjoyable social activities and we would like to thank DDL once again for being a superb partner in building this tournament into what it has become today,” Fernandes told the gathering.
He stated that the Board is equally delighted to also have on board silver sponsor Ansa McAl, who’re the main backer of the ever growing veterans competition.
“The veterans’ competition was introduced in 2006 for players over the age of 35 years and there could never be a better fit than the favourite beverage of the veterans which is Carib Beer.”Fernandes also welcomed Digicel, the sponsor of the women’s competition, pointing out that even though they’ve now been a part of the DMW, the Company has been involved previously in the support of hockey.
“While this will be Digicel’s first year of commitment at this level, they’ve been supportive of the sport in the past,” Fernandes said.
Among the other sponsors Fernandes mentioned were DeAbreu’s Creations, who he revealed has been with the GHB for many years, Rayovac and Bounty.
He also thanked the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport for making the facility available once again, while the Guyana Police Force came in for special mention for its support over the years in ensuring that the safety and security of the teams were not compromised.
Chand in her comments said that DDL is happy to be back on board partnering the GHB, adding that it was indeed an easy decision for them to make in relation to offering its support.
“Due to the professionalism that is usually on display by the GHB, we found it an easy task to make the decision to be back once more as the major sponsor,” Vereen Chand told the media.
She stated that it is no secret that DDL is one of the largest supporters of sport in Guyana and the main reason for this according to her is that it gives the youths of this country the opportunity to be involved in useful engagement.
She promised the Company’s continued commitment to the Festival.
Yussuf said that last year saw some exceptional performances from the teams and they could not pass up the opportunity to join the Board once again. “We are thankful that we are a part of the tournament and we intend to maintain our support for the event.”
Moore admitted that this is the first time that Digicel will be part of the tournament, but it did not mean that their support for the sport was absent.
She spoke of their involvement in sponsoring the team’s participation in Venezuela earlier in the year as one instance of the Company’s support in the past.
Moore then urged fans to come out and flock the venue and be very much a part of the tournament.
Over nine teams are expected from overseas for the competition.
