This year’s Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Football Tournament got off to a rollicking start with defending champions Hope Street of Tiger Bay among the winners on opening night Wednesday at Independence Boulevard.
The night’s action which had in attendance Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Banks DIH Marketing executive Carlton Joao, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart and other important personalities saw a large crowd converge on the facility to witness some exhilarating matches.
Dr. Anthony, who kicked off the ball to start proceedings, said he was extremely pleased to see so many persons coming from the various communities involved in the activity.
He stated that they are able to experience football in a different way.
Joao in his remarks said that they expect a bigger response from the fans this time, especially in light of the 100% increase in prize monies.
The winner is set to receive $500,000, runner-up $300,000, third place $150,000 and fourth place finisher $50,000.
In the first game, Albouystown ‘A’ defeated Woolford Avenue 5- 0 with Devon Dooker (4th, 5th), Devon Small (8th, 9th) and Roy Samuels (15th ), being the goalscorers.
In Game 2 Hope Street-Tiger Bay beat Plaisance 3-0.
