– announces $40 million support for Circuit upgrade
By Rawle Welch
The atmosphere and artistic layout resembled that of the ‘Academy Awards’ and it was that occasion that His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo took full advantage of to make the most important announcement in motor racing for sometime.
President Jagdeo, who was among a record crowd that witnessed some of the most exhilarating races during, last Sunday’s Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship, announced to an audience of glitz and glamour that attended the Presentation Ceremony for outstanding performers, his Government’s commitment to give the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club $40million to completely resurface the South Dakota Circuit.
Shortly after making the announcement, President of the club Raj Boodhoo and Manager of the firm contracted to undertake the job Dipcon Engineering Services Ltd Vishnu Mungal signed the respective contracts in the presence of the President and attendees after which a huge round of applause followed.
The President shortly after congratulating Guyana on winning the Country title in this year’s Caribbean Championship commended those who worked passionately to keep the sport alive.
He said that there was a time when his Government was unable to provide such munificence because of the calamitous economic situation that they inherited, rather they had to focus on other sectors such as education.
President Jagdeo remarked that because those critical sectors were underfunded and a large percentage of the country’s revenue going to service debt, they could not do much for sport.
He noted that things are changing and they are now able to allocate more funding to Sport and Arts.
“As our economy gets better, we could start allocating more and more monies to the other sectors such as sports because we need a renaissance in these areas,” Jagdeo stated.
He pointed out that the lack of adequate support previously for sports and the arts was mainly due to the difficult circumstances in tough economic times.
He revealed that negotiations with the club started some six months ago and three contractors participated in the bidding process and the one with the lowest bid was selected.
The entire contract is worth $57million and the balance will have to come from the club.
Boodhoo in his speech thanked all the competitors for their support, adding that without them this year which he described as the best both in terms of results and performances could not have been possible without them.
He thanked the sponsors, club members and all those who played a part in making the year a successful one.
Team Jeffrey also came in for high praise from the President.
Other remarks came from GT&T Marketing executive Wystan Robertson, Seaboard Marine Caribbean Representative Stephen Bell, GMRSC member Keith Evelyn, who thanked President Jagdeo on behalf of the club and top executives of Barbados and Jamaica.
