One of the persons arrested following the stabbing to death of 18-year-old Dwayne Durant on Thursday night, last, was yesterday charged with his murder, while another was slapped with a simple larceny charge. The matter was held in camera yesterday since they were juveniles.
The 16-year-old accused was yesterday not required to plead to the indictable offence of murder when appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry.
The allegation is that on November 4, at the Georgetown Seawall he murdered Dwayne Durant.
His close friend, also 16 years of age, is accused of attempting to commit a felony – robbing Trevon Barrow of a gold chain.
Attorney at law Glenn Hanoman represented the two juveniles.
The simple larceny accused was placed on $50,000 bail and is expected to make his second court appearance on December 13, while the murder accused is scheduled to return on November 23.
Kijanna Wharton, a friend of Durant who was with him at the time of the incident, had told this publication that, Durant, himself and another friend, were walking just east of Sheriff Street on the seawall.
He said three persons, including the two who were later captured, approached them.
According to Wharton, they knew the assailants since they were involved in an altercation two months ago.
One of the teenagers in Durant’s group apparently threw a punch at the others and one of them fell over the seawall in the ensuing scuffle. Durant was also pushed over the seawall onto the rocks and it was during this time that the person who was there pulled out what was described as a long knife and stabbed him in his neck.
