Dear Editor,
It’s ironic that the Minister of Health would rush to Berbice and commend the staff of the hospital there for the performance of their duties in regards to the twelve lives that were lost recently in another mini bus accident, and is not commending the staff at all the public health places throughout the country for their dedicated commitment in making sure lives are not lost despite the lack of proper equipments or their measly salaries.
The recent deaths at the public hospitals in Guyana are very alarming and citizens should be very concerned, because here is a Minister who would boast regularly of new or renovated Health institutions but is not boasting of paying them satisfying salaries or providing them with proper equipment.
At the Zeelugt Health Centre, nurses have to use a something shaped like a wine glass that is wooden and about four inches long to listen to the unborn babies in place of a stethoscope.
I don’t know is that is happening throughout the country. Whilst my wife was giving birth recently at Woodlands Hospital, the midwife exclaimed that some cord was around the baby’s neck. She, the midwife, assisted in some physical way to help save my daughter’s life.
Today we all reminisce and are grateful for the midwife’s dedication to her duties. I don’t know if it’s because of the salary she’s being paid and there being a private hospital. But then again, it could be her interest in doing her job.
My wife and her relatives are always scared of going to public hospitals because of all those unnecessary deaths. They all share their views with one another and recently I saw that their views are being shared with people outside their circle.
Private hospitals are costly but if someone wants to save his or her life or someone else I believe that is the only way to go.
Our health minister would boast of all the systems and new places but I never heard him boasting of increasing salaries.
