Dear Editor,
We the undersigned seek assistance for our dear school which is going to the gutter. We the teachers of Lower Corentyne Secondary School are highly perturbed over the current administration of the school since September 2010 when the previous Deputy took over the reins as the Acting Head teacher.
Lower Corentyne is faced with a number of issues which we wish to highlight:
1) Teachers are frequently absent from school and this is not being reflected in the time book. Also lateness of teachers is not being monitored and as such, teachers walk in any time and sign 8:15am which reflects them as being early.
2) Two teachers are attending the University of Guyana. Nothing is wrong with that, but these two teachers often attend school when they feel like and at a time convenient to them. Further, they are not properly dressed for work, for more than often, they wear casual clothing to school. When they do attend school they do not report to their class but sit in the staffroom and complete assignments.
It is sad but we must state that one of these teachers is the CSEC Social Studies teachers and when concerned teachers make objections they are victimised by the head master. Another teacher who recently graduated from CPCE is attending UG without release and she too, does not visit her class frequently but is around the school doing UG assignments.
3) The headmaster of the school does not teach, he has students writing on the chalkboard and we know the History has to be taught in a proper manner; all this head teacher does is to hang around the senior female students who are often seen hugging him and when they misbehave he does nothing about it since his main aim is to befriend the students.
He acts in the most unprofessional manner and has no respect for the other members of the administrative staff.
4) The school is like “free for all”. The few dedicated teachers are trying but the support is not there. Recently two new teachers were appointed to the school and instead of being inducted into the system they are always in the headmaster’s office sitting in his chair, sleeping or are on the school’s computer.
Is this why they were placed in the education system?
When they do decide to teach they are always in the habit of chasing the children out of the classroom. For example, if child does not have a pencil or a ruler that child is put out of the class…These are atrocities in the system; it is not fair to the parents and the children. Someone needs to step in.
5)Previously, under the headship of Ms Hussain and Mr. Ally the school was
deemed one of the most disciplined in Region Six. It is sad that these two teachers have left only weeks now and the school has regressed into a zone of indiscipline.
We wish to state too that the CSEC results improved under the leadership of Ms Husain and Mr Ally, but instead of maintaining the high standards set by these two, Mr Fraser is ruining the school.
There was a decline in teachers’ lateness and absenteeism, but now it is all mayhem at the school.
A very senior master sits all day in the office downstairs and does not report to her assigned classes but, when officers visit they pretend that they are efficient and effective.
The current Deputy is being treated as non-existent and some junior teachers are given the responsibilities of the DHM. It is the ninth week of school and the attendance registers and the admission registers are incomplete.
Notes of lessons are not being effectively monitored and we shudder to think where this school is heading. The current head teacher believes that administration is all about befriending the children and the teachers. He is of the opinion that the school is his and he can manage it as he sees fit.
7) No PTA general meting was held for the term so parents are unaware of what is happening in their children’s educational life, and one staff meeting was held for the term…Is this the way foward?
These problems need to be addressed now before it is too late for our young ones.
