…16 more left homeless
Yet again, another fire of unknown origin struck Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, the second within 24 hours. Yesterday’s fire destroyed two houses at 12 June Street.
The blaze which broke out just after 14:00 hours yesterday, left 16 persons- seven adults and nine children homeless.
Roshelle Josiah, who resides in a bottom flat of one of the buildings, told Kaieteur News, that she and her son were the sole occupants of the home, when the fire started.
She said that she was watching television, when she felt her apartment become over heated. She said that she heard a loud impact coming from the upper flat, so she went upstairs to see what had made the sound.
Roshelle Josiah said that when she opened the door of the three bed-room apartment, the upper flat was filled with smoke. She said that she immediately turned off the “main switch” and ran downstairs, where she then noticed fire coming from the middle bedroom.
She said that she alerted the father of her child and the neighbours, who quickly formed a bucket brigade and started dousing the flames, but the fire became uncontrollable.
The woman said that they had no option but to exit the yard and wait for the fire tenders to arrive.
She indicated that the family has lost a lot. She added that she was only able to save her personal documents and a mattress.
Roshelle’s niece, Tomika Josiah, came home hours after the incident and began crying. She is contending that the fire may have been the result of foul play.
“Dem trying to kill mi mother… Is 2 years dem trying and dem ain’t get through…dem wicked,” said a tear-eyed Tomika.
A resident told Kaieteur News that when the incident occurred, he tried to out the flames with buckets of water, but that proved futile. He contented that the fire tenders came 45 minutes later.
On Sunday, Dexter Bristol and his family were left homeless, after a fire of unknown origin struck their three-bedroom house at lot 27 Bush Corner, Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara.
