Dear Editor,
It saddens me to read of all the tragic, unavoidable maternal deaths in Guyana. Someone must be held accountable; it is negligence, Cytotec is used in small doses, .25 mgs every four hours for reopening the cervix.
In larger doses it is used in case of fetal demise, and the patient should not have had any uterine surgery prior to this procedure.
Cytotec is not even an approved drug for use in pregnant women; it is only approved for serious gastric problems. Nursing personnel must never administer this drug, only doctors.
A few years ago my father was a patient at the GPHC and the doctor spoke only Spanish, fortunately for me I spoke some.
I lived in Miami and was employed as a registered nurse on labour and delivery for 24 years. All the Spanish speaking doctors had to be trained in the USA, and have a good command of the English language.
Most of them are nurses in the USA, because they cannot pass the boards, yet the Government of Guyana allows them to practice their lack of skills on my people.
Please take a good look of your health care system, it needs revamping.
