Ministry withdraws letters to QC teachers

Following extensive talks with the Minister of Education over the weekend, the Guyana Teachers’ Union has managed to get the letters issued to three teachers of Queen’s College withdrawn. The letters spelt out disciplinary action in the wake of an investigation into the Neesa Gopaul incident.
Late yesterday evening, following a meeting with Minister of Education Shaik Baksh, General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Coretta Mc Donald, made the announcement. Speaking with the media, Ms. Mc Donald said that from the offset the investigation was null since the Union was not involved at any point.
“The procedures were not observed; that is the investigation was done and GTU was not a part of it. Most of the documents we have circulating in school state that the Union must be involved in any investigation.”
According to Mc Donald, the entire investigation and its findings were reviewed and hence the letters that were issued to Candida Williams, Deputy head Nadia Hollingsworth and Carol Marks have been withdrawn.
Mc Donald said the Minister has given all assurances that the previous letters will be followed by another letter indicating that the initial letter is null and void.
Meanwhile, as it relates to the letter which was issued to the now retired Head teacher of the school, Mc Donald said that letter has not been withdrawn. She however noted that since the head teacher is also a member of the union, the body will be pursuing the matter. She explained that the matter will be pursued with the hope of getting a lighter penalty.
In addition, the Guyana Teachers’ Union has stated that it will now be fully endorsing the 50th annual school championship.
President of the Union, Colin Bynoe has since stated that he is pleased with the decision of the Ministry of Education.
