Dear Editor,
I cannot understand the Guyana Teacher’s Union’s (GTU) stance against the Ministry of Education for disciplining those involved in the handling of the Neesa Gopaul case.
It was utterly arrogant on the GTU’s part to release that statement to the press, demanding that the Ministry renounce its decision to take disciplinary action against those culpable in this case.
What happened to Neesa Gopaul shocked the entire Guyanese population. It was reprehensible on the part of all involved.
From the teachers to the social workers, all were in the position to assist this young lady, but failed to do their part in protecting her.
The people of Guyana, in their outrage and disgust, demanded that those responsible for the tragedy that befell Neesa be made examples of.
This was the only way that the message of zero tolerance for such neglect of responsibilities would be clearly conveyed.
The public is in agreement with the disciplinary line that Government has taken to discipline these heads.
Since the Neesa Gopaul revelation, a social worker has resigned and four QC teachers have been disciplined.
Like all other Guyanese, I was angered by the way in which this matter was handled, so it goes without saying that I also am in favour of these disciplinary actions.
I honestly believe that these actions were completely justified. Further, this was an administrative matter which did not require the input of the Guyana Teachers’ Union.
Collin Bynoe was out of order when he threatened to jeopardize the school sports activities as sheer spitefulness towards the Ministry of Education.
Does Bynoe realise how insensitive and indifferent he appears to be towards the suffering, abuse and murder of this child? This in itself is a mockery!
This girl did not endure a week of suffering; her case is special because this was happening for more than a year.
This means that these teachers had more than enough time and too many signs to not have done more for this child.
Teachers have a moral obligation to act in the best interests of the children entrusted to them.
Neesa Gopaul is already one child too many that we have lost to cruelty and carelessness.
This action was necessary to drive home the consequence of those in authority not seriously executing their responsibilities.
