Negus Pooran, of New Hope, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell yesterday afternoon to answer the charge of simple larceny.
It is alleged that on October 16, last, the defendant stole from K.R.S Construction Company Incorporated, 808 fence castings, one metal toolbox and one electrical drill.
Pooran previously pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charge. However, yesterday at court, he asked to change his plea to ‘guilty’ since he explained that he was being treated “badly” in jail.
He told Magistrate Lovell that the articles were all recovered and requested leniency for his act of indiscretion, explaining that he changed his plea with the hope of having to spend less time in the lock-ups.
Pooran also stated that he was a father of four children and he needed to take care of them.
When the Magistrate asked the defendant what caused him to commit the crime, he replied, “Ah don’t know wah went in meh head, your worship. Everybody does mek mistakes. Ah sorry and it won’t happen again.” And for the next three months it would not.
Magistrate Lovell sentenced Pooran to three months’ imprisonment.
Also appearing before Magistrate Lovell yesterday was 23-year-old Shudat Raghoo Andrew of 85 Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.
He told the court that he is a truck driver. He was placed on $15,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting a police officer.
It is alleged that on Saturday, last, Andrew resisted Police Constable 21077 Peters who was stationed at the South Dakota Circuit, Timehri.
The defendant was at that time said to be under the influence of alcohol while operating his motor-vehicle.
He reportedly “dealt one kick to the right side face of the officer”.
In his defense, Andrew told Magistrate that the police “handled him roughly” and they just “pulled” him out of his vehicle and took him into the police vehicle.
He stated that he had two children and was never charged for any offence before. He was granted bail with no objection from the prosecution.
The defendant is expected to return to court on November 25.
