… child was drugged, raped by neighbour
The Child Care and Protection Agency has decided to take custody of a 14-year-old girl for fear of what could happen to her, given that her alleged rapist was put on station bail, the girl’s relatives said yesterday.
The incident occurred two Thursdays ago while the girl was alone at her Enmore, East Coast Demerara home. The alleged rapist lived just next door.
According to relatives, the girl was admitted to the Georgetown Hospital and was free to go since last Friday.
But the girl’s relatives said that they were told by the Ministry of Human Services that it was unsafe to take her back to the village, given that her alleged rapist was released on bail.
The man was arrested by Cove and John police, but the girl’s relative said he was released on $100,000 bail.
According to the girl’s relatives, she was alone on the day in question when the neighbour, a man believed to be in his 30s, evidently scaled the fence and entered the house through the window.
The girl told her relatives that the man confronted her while she was in the kitchen. He offered her Banko wine and the drink “Sting.” The girl also told her relatives that she saw him pour into the drink a white substance.
He thereafter performed sexual acts with the young woman. After the act, he forced the young woman to drink insecticide which the family had in the house to control insects.
After the man made good his escape, the young woman cried out for help and attracted the attention of neighbours who then investigated the matter.
The neighbours thereafter called the Cove and John Police who arrested the man. However, the family is angry that the man has been released on bail.
When the girl was taken to the hospital, the matter was drawn to the attention of the Ministry of Human Services, under which falls the Child Care and Protection Agency.
As a result, the family says officials of the Ministry have said they would not release the girl to go back home just yet.
