Dear Editor,
I do not usually respond to letters or articles written for or against me since I have the greatest respect for freedom of expression, however unpalatable or biased such views may be.
This is why I chose to ignore so many pieces of correspondence in the media which sought to project me as some “fossilized” ideologue incapable of discerning or even worse, coming to terms with new and changing realities.
Some of those who chose to attack me do so, I think, out of some preconceived notion that I am a “conformist” who is being “rewarded” for such behaviour..
I respectfully beg to differ.
Let me say very clearly and unequivocally that as a member of the PPP, I have no problem whatsoever with the organisational principle of democratic centralism which has been and continues to be the defining characteristic of party discipline and which over the decades have kept the PPP united and strong.
Disappointingly, some of the attacks are coming from quarters who have broken ranks with the PPP and who at one time or the other were Party activists and strong advocates of the Party and what it stood for.
I respect their right to differ and to be critical. My only advice to them is not to allow bitterness to get the better of them to a point where they lose their sense of objectivity and balance.
Let us not make the mistake of, as it were,”throwing away the baby with the bath water”.
And one final piece of advice. There is no perfect individual and by extension, party or organisation. In the words of VI Lenin: “He is not wise who makes no mistakes. There are no such men, nor will there ever be. He is wise who makes not very serious mistakes and corrects them easily and quickly.
