Antonio Quintero maintained his stranglehold on the yellow jersey and in the end claimed the 2010 Edition of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport / Ministry of Health ‘Ride for Life’ Cycle Road Race title which concluded yesterday in Georgetown with a ride from Kara Kara in Linden.

Quintero, who won the opening stage and stayed among the leaders for all the remaining stages, held onto the yellow jersey almost throughout, losing it briefly to Alonso Greaves after his fourth stage win on the Essequibo Coast. He clocked an impressive 10 hours 18 minutes and 26 seconds to defeat several talented local riders including Eric Snakar, Marlon Williams, Tony Simon, Walter Grant-Stuart, Alonso Greaves and Geron Williams in the top 10.
The final stage was captured by Miami-based Frank Travieso of Team Coco’s, who won in 2 hours 40 minutes 28 seconds with overseas-based Guyanese Godfrey Pollydore second, Alonso Greaves third, Antonio Quintero fourth, Geron Williams fifth and Warren McKay sixth, all credited with the same time.
To note, Berbice rider Neil Reece, who was within the top six going into the final stage yesterday, suffered a spill and came in 12 minutes behind the leaders, effectively ending his chances of a top 10 placing.
The ‘Old Warrior’ Guyanese world champion cyclists, Aubrey Gordon, continues to roll back the years and completed all five stages even though not finishing in the top 10.
Paul De Nobrega claimed the junior title, while Quintero copped the veteran title as well. Attractive cash prizes were on offer for each stage winner and $200,000 for the overall champion.
Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy and Director of Sport Neil Kumar and Permanent Secretary in the sport Ministry, Alfred King, were among the officials on hand at the closing and took part in the presentation proceedings.
