Good Success defeated Sans Souci by four wickets to win the final of the Igloo Ice Cream 40-over cricket competition played recently at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground in Good Success.
Good Success won the toss and asked Sans Souci to bat first after the game was reduced to 35 overs due to a late start caused by excessive preparation moisture in the pitch.
Openers Satnarine Sahadeo and Varounie Sasepaul put together 28 for the first wicket before Sasepaul was leg before to Chandreka Ragnauth (1-19) for 12.
Heera Sukram then joined Sahadeo and took the score to 63 before Sahadeo (15) was bowled by pacer Bernard Lewis who also scattered the stumps of former Essequibo U-19 player Roopnarine Persaud (00) and Essequibo U-19 allrounder Seon Venture (00) to leave the score at 69-4. Vickram Ramnarine (10) and Sukram added 14 for the fifth wicket before Ramnarine had his wood work disturbed by Lewis as Sans Souci slipped into further trouble at 83-5.
Former national U-15 player Oyono Sampson, who scored 32 (3×4) and Sukram, who top scored with 39 (3×4, 1×6), then put together 52 for the sixth wicket stand as the visitors fought back. Sukram who hit left arm spinner Imran Khan over long on for six was stumped off Nazeer Mohamed at 135 while Sampson who drove Khan for consecutive fours through point was leg before to Abdool Salim.
Sans Souci then lost their last three wickets for 15 runs to be all out for 150 in 32.2 overs. Lewis was the pick of the bowlers with 4-19 off 4 overs and Mohamed had 3-12 from 5.2 overs.
Good Success openers Arjune Persaud and Imran Khan then got their team off to a flyer adding 59 for the opening stand before Arjune (20) who pulled pacer Roopnarine Persaud for six over mid wicket then drove him through mid off for fours was caught off the same bowler who also accounted for Khan (19) as the host slipped to 60-2. Persaud then had Komal Persaud (01) leg before while off spinner Gurnath Khemraj accounted for Nazeer Mohamed (01) and Chandreka Ragnauth (06) to leave at 70-5 in 12 overs.
Abdool Salim (04) soon followed after he was caught off medium pacer Derwin Daniels to make it 75-5. Allrounder Wazir Khan and Bernard Lewis then featured in an unbeaten seventh wicket partnership of 76 as Good Success secured victory in 30.2 overs ending on 151-6. Khan led with 29 (4×4) and Lewis made 25 (2×4) as Persaud took 3-20 off 7 overs and Khemraj 2-18 from 7.
Good Success received the winning trophy and Sans Souci the runner up prize while Lewis was given the man-of-the-match award. Speaking at the presentation ceremony Chairman of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee Sheik Ahmad congratulated the winners and thanked the sponsor (Sterling Products Ltd) for coming on board.
