NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force has stepped up its campaign against the sale and use of firecrackers. Yesterday, a senior official called on the populace to let better sense prevail and desist from the use and purchase of the prohibited items.
Over the weekend, especially on Deepavali night, several persons from both East and West Berbice were arrested after being caught with squibs, ‘thunder bolts’, ‘crazy kings’, ‘Bin Laden’ and other firecrackers. These individuals are likely to face charges.
The official noted that persons were detained in almost all station districts – especially Fort Wellington, Springlands, New Amsterdam, Rose Hall town and Reliance – however, figures were not readily available.
In the days leading to the festive season, more foot and mobile patrols will be visible in all sub-divisions. According to the spokesperson, the members of the Guyana Police Force are cognizant that they cannot completely stamp out the use and sale of firecrackers but they are aiming at minimizing it by getting to the source. There are also cases where vendors are mobile, thus making it more difficult for police to arrest the situation.
According to the source, the bulk of firecrackers on the market in Berbice entered the country through the porous Guyana/Suriname border. For some it is a thriving business, fun for others, and a danger to society. The official noted that on Deepavali night these explosives were not only used by one religious group but by a wide cross-section of people.
The senior official called on parents and teachers to caution their children about the danger involved. Many disregard the hazard and hurl the firecrackers at others, at animals and into vehicles.
Reference was made to a fire on Friday afternoon, which is suspected to have its origin from the use of firecrackers. That incident left a Corriverton family homeless. The police official noted that their initial investigation suggested that the explosive was used by one of the occupants of the home – a seven-year-old with special needs and not as stated in the version given by the owner of the home. However, due to his age, he was not detained. Officials from Division ‘B’ are awaiting the findings of the Guyana Fire Service.
