Police allegedly attacked and brutalized a prominent businessman and miner in Bartica, Saturday evening, and sparked a mini-riot by residents who converged at the station after the businessman was taken into custody. The businessman, Krishna Persaud, claims that he was beaten by policemen in the presence of family members and onlookers in First Avenue. He said that he was near a business place
According to Persaud, he was standing in front of the establishment playing music in his vehicle. He said that another car was also doing the same.
Persaud recounted that he eventually turned his music system off and the other vehicle continued. A while later, the police turned up and approached the other car that was playing music and he was also approached by the same set of policemen who told him that he was needed at the station.
“After the policeman told me I was wanted at the station, I asked him what was the reason, or what was the allegation made for me to go at the station.” Persaud said.
He explained that the policeman just repeated himself and he continued to enquire as to the reason for him traveling to the police station.
“He (the policeman) just chuck me and other officers (from a pick-up) just start coming kicking and cuffing me. One of them tried grabbing my gold and diamond band on my hand. He even pull off my gold chain but I grab it back and I holler for my brother-in-law to tell he I getting rob. They then beat him up when he come to ask. And they dash both of us in the back of the police pick-up and stomp us on the way to the police station.”
After reaching the station, Persaud said that he noticed many of the spectators who saw the actions of the police turn up at the station in droves and protest the ill-treatment that was dished out by the policemen.
He said that a request was made to the officer in charge of the station to seek medical attention at the Bartica Hospital. This was allowed and Persaud says he now has the medical certificates to prove that he was injured. The same thing applied to his brother-in-law.
He said that they were later released from the station. The peeved businessman related that yesterday morning two officers from Georgetown visited Bartica and took statements from himself, his sister and brother-in-law.
He said that they have promised that an investigation would be launched into the action of the police.
A police official confirmed that an investigation has been launched internally.
