Dear Editor,
I read with awe at the decision of the Ann’s Grove Secondary head teacher, who wants to ‘get rid’ of 70 students because according to her, they did not reach the required standard to write the CSEC examination.
There is a saying in education that says, “If the child didn’t learn then the teacher didn’t teach”. What I would like to know is how can 70 students fall by the wayside under the watch of such a seemingly vigilant school manager? If the students had deficiencies, why weren’t they detected in the lower school and addressed accordingly?
It may look as though I am placing all the blame on the head teacher, but the fact of the matter is she is in charge and the onus is entirely on her to ensure that all aspects of the school function smoothly. This should include quality education for all.
I am aware that teachers work under some stressful conditions at times. But to disallow 70 students from writing a major external examination because their academic level was not on par with expectations says a lot about the delivery of education at the particular school.
The Ministry of Education should seriously look into this matter.
