While Lethem is on its way to exceptional development, Regional Chairman Calrindo Lucas, has said that there is much more to be desired within the security sector.
Lucas, in a recent interview said that the region is rapidly developing. More so Lethem is showing that it has great potentials.
According to Lucas he is pleased with the current growth of the Lethem Community. He explained that the community is not where he would like to see it but it is on its way. Lucas said the community has vastly improved in terms of infrastructure.
“We have not reached perfection as no other community in Guyana has but we are getting there, in all the other areas we are doing well but we do have our short comings.”
Lucas said as it relates to the economical developments Lethem is moving at a rapid rate. “We have not yet reached self reliance but we have moved away from subsistence approach to a more semi commercial approach…If the opportunity is provided the region has great potentials.”
However, the Chairman said that there is much to be desired as it relates to the security sector. He noted that while the community is attracting a lot of foreign investors, police presence is needed so as to reassure the businesses.
The Chairman also noted the recent addition of another air service, which will be a great boost to the community. In the past, the Chairman said, transportation getting to and from Lethem, was a major deterrent for many.
The issue was further compounded by the bad state of the Georgetown to Lethem trail. Only recently Air Services Limited launched a trice a week flight in and out of Lethem at an affordable rate.
The soon to be constructed Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry, the Chairman said, will also be a welcomed initiative since this will assist greatly the business community. He explained that this would assist persons as it relates to moving with large amount of cash on their person.
However, residents of the community said they are not pleased with the constant power outage in the community. Residents said that the power outages have been causing them financially since their perishables are not giving them their monies worth as it did in the past.
To this, a senior official from the community said that the current situation is as a result of the increase in demand for electricity in the community with the rapid development in the business sector.
