The National Assembly on Thursday approved a motion put forward by Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee to formalize the concessions granted to taxi services by the administration.
Among the concessions given for them to all re-spray their vehicles in Corporate Yellow are a 25 per cent reduction on excise taxes for vehicles imported to be used for the purpose as taxis.
There is also the reduction of the $4,000 fee paid for road licence to zero for a period of 10 years as well as the reduction of the fitness fee of $1,500 to zero for a period of 10 years.
Rohee told the House that the decision to provide the concessions was to assist the taxi services so that complying with the new regulation would be less onerous.
He said that the decision to have the vehicles sprayed in the Corporate Yellow was a decision by the taxi services and the entire process saw several consultations.
To date there have been two extensions of the deadline with the last being December 31, 2010.
Both the Alliance for Change and the People’s National Congress Reform supported the Motion.
Tourism Minister Manniram Prashad told the House that the move was aimed at improving the service in Guyana.
He spoke of the code of conduct that they have been working on and added that there is a marked difference in the provision of the service.
Prashad drew reference to the Airport Taxi Services which had been streamlined in a similar manner and the reviews have been favourable.
