Alonzo Greaves survived a ferocious sprint to the finish line by a large group of riders in yesterday’s third stage of this year’s Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport (MCYS) / Ministry of Health (MoH) ‘Tour of Guyana’ Road Race which was held from Wales Police Station to Parika yesterday.
Covering a distance of 35 miles, the young Guyanese rider, who recently returned from participating in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, finished in a time of 58 minutes 42 seconds to hold off the consistent Warren McKay, who once again had to settle for second place, while another young rider Geron Williams ended third.
Second stage winner Godfrey Pollydore closed in fourth, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams followed him in fifth and the evergreen Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton showed his class once again with a creditable sixth place finish.
According to an official, the overall standing is unlikely to change significantly since most of the riders in contention came home with the peleton in close pursuit of the top six finishers.
Cuban-born Antonio Quintero held the yellow jersey at the completion of Stage 2 and he is widely anticipated to retain the overall lead.
Forty-eight cyclists started the race and all of them finished the race.
The race now moves to Essequibo today where the participants will do battle from Supenaam to Charity and back to Suddie.
The final stage will be held from Kara Kara on the Linden / Soesdyke Highway and finish on Homestretch Avenue tomorrow.
At stake is $200,000 to the winner, while respective stage winners will collect $10,000, second place finisher $6,000 and third placed $4,000.
Presentation of prizes will be done at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall following the completion of the final stage.
