Bishops’, Mae’s ‘A’ on U-13 collision course

It seemed as though the schools participating in the Digicel-sponsored Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) National Schools’ Tournament took Henry Greene’s hopes for a competitive tournament seriously.
Yesterday, at the National Gymnasium, Bishops High School and Mae’s’ Secondary ‘A’ team placed themselves on a collision course for the Under-13 Championships after overcoming the tough challenges in their respective groups.
President of the GTTA, Greene, had told the media at the launch of the event on Thursday that he anticipates a competitive tournament. Well, Greene could not have asked for more yesterday when the country’s leading table tennis-playing schools gathered.
Bishops High School easily topped Group ‘A’ with 3-0 wins over both New Amsterdam Multilateral School and Combined Schools. The effort gave them four points and earned them a place in today’s semi-final game. Bishops awaits the winner of the Marian Academy ‘A’ team and St Joseph’s High game.
Mae’s’ ‘A’ team won 3-1 against Marian Academy ‘B’ team, 3-0 against West Demerara and 3-0 against St. Joseph High School. They earned a place in the other semi-final game, awaiting the winner of the Queen’s College and New Amsterdam Multi game.
The competition will continue with the semi-finals today with final tomorrow. Up to press time yesterday, competition in the Under-15 tournament had also started. The tournament is being played in U-13, U-15 and U-18 categories.
