Edwin Carrington, Secretary General of CARICOM, has garnered yet another award for his services to the people of the Caribbean. Newly knighted by a grateful Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Edwin Carrington received that nation’s highest honour yesterday.
The Prime Minister of Antigua conferred the Secretary General with the Knight Commander (Ad Honorem) of the Most Distinguished Order Of The Nation (KCN) and Barbuda, Dr. W. Baldwin Spencer, MP at a ceremony held in St. John’s, Antigua.
Spencer, who served as Chairman of CARICOM in 2004, spoke of many instances during his tenure when Carrington provided not only support and advice but expertly guided him as he undertook the duties and responsibilities of that office.
He said of Carrington’s work, “His consistent and tireless efforts to build a strong and effective Community for the people of the Caribbean region and for generations to come, has been a shining example of professionalism and dedication.”
Prime Minister Spencer highlighted a number of the achievements that Carrington has made during his almost two decades of service to the cause of regional integration. These included the successful revision of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, the establishment of the CARICOM Single Market, the inauguration of the Caribbean Court of Justice and the creation of the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS.
Carrington’s tireless efforts to further regional integration and development were lauded by Spencer as well as his legacy of outstanding public service and selfless regional commitment. But more than that, Spencer told Carrington that outside of his career achievements, the country saw fit to honour the Secretary General for his “… outstanding and far-reaching contribution to the diplomatic efforts of our country and to its economic development, as well as for your distinguished service to our Caribbean Community …”
Sir Edwin Carrington is a native of the Caribbean island of Tobago. After a short stint as Trinidad’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Carrington was appointed Secretary-General of Caricom in August 1992. A little over a month before his son died in September, Carrington announced his decision to step down as Secretary General of CARICOM.
The 72 year old career diplomat who speaks English, French and some Spanish will demit office at the end of the year, two years before the end of what would have been his fourth five-year term.
