Dear Editor,
One writer in his weekly commentary captioned his discourse, “It can only happen in Guyana” which was a terse referral to the gross ineptitude exhibited by some government ministers.
I am tempted to agree with this writer who went on to highlight the incompetence of certain ministers in the execution of their public duties, something that bears a distinct imprint in some government quarters.
This assessment rings true when you take an in-depth look at the Neesa Gopaul case, considering the number of persons held responsible for her death, or should I say the number of persons who killed her. Never in the years of my short existence on God’s green earth have I seen such nonsense.
Here we have a Minister of Human Services who lacks the wherewithal to run her ministry trying to shore up her image somehow somewhere, by making scapegoats of others. She has fired two of her social workers, which is an innocuous move when you think of it, because these were not workers in the ministry at all. When you include Neesa’s school you see scapegoating at its best because the teachers there did what all teachers are required to do by law. Her teachers having knowledge of abuse at home brought this to the attention of the Human Services Ministry who took up the matter, but later ran into a brick wall. Teachers cannot invade homes the Human Services Ministry can, that’s the purpose of their existence and neglecting their duties is not a fault of her school.
I am a teacher who knows my role and there is no Human Services Minister who can ask more of me when I have notified them of a problem involving a student. The matter was theirs to take immediate action, which they did not in my estimation. The minister ought to bite the bullet forthwith, accept failure on her part and quit.
The gruesome discovery of a battered body weighed down with dumb bells does this not send a clue? So why bungle this case with extraneous factors running around in circles, just stick to what we know and move on with this bloody case.
Staying on this subject I focus my attention on the Ministry of Transport, and here again we have the situation of a square peg in a round hole. Robeson Benn went about firing duly qualified and competent Ivor English for reasons that are at best dubious. You take a look at that ministry today and one can see all the hallmark of failure.
I think President Jagdeo needs to have a serious look at some of those persons he has entrusted to public office and make a qualified assessment of their performances. We are certainly being short changed in this regard. Some ministers should be fired.
