Cuba-born Antonio Quintero, who now resides in the USA held on to the yellow jersey in this year’s Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport (MCYS) / Ministry of Health (MoH) ‘Tour of Guyana’ Cycle Road Race after the completion of two of the five stages yesterday.
Quintero, who won the first stage from Corriverton to New Amsterdam in Berbice in one hour 38 minutes and 39 seconds, came home with the main peleton in the second stanza which started at New Amsterdam and ended on Carifesta Avenue.
In the opening stage, the Miami resident who rides for Team Coco’s came home ahead of Guyana’s Eric Sankar, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Berbician Neil Reece, Tony Simon and Walter Grant-Stuart in that order to lead the field by 2:41 seconds.
In the second stage, Guyana’s Anguilla-based Godfrey Pollydore won in a driving finish from Warren ‘Forty’ McKay in a time of 2:24.02, while Alonzo Greaves finished third.
Some 57 riders faced the starter’s orders in the first leg, while 54 took to the line in the second with riders from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Suriname, the USA and Guyana battling for a top prize of $200,000 to the winner over the 266 miles race.
The tour continues today from Wales to Parika, a distance of 35 miles, while the fourth stage which covers 62 miles will be held tomorrow from Supenaam to Charity and back to Suddie in Essequibo.
The final stage will be held from Kara Kara on the Linden / Soesdyke Highway and finish on Homestretch Avenue.
The presentation of prizes to the respective winners will be done after the completion of the final stage at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Meanwhile, the respective stage winners will receive $10,000, runner-up $6,000 and third place $4,000.
