After months of planning, negotiating and hard work the man who gave Guyana its first ever World Title Boxing match at the National Park in 2004 has once gain produced a feast for local Boxing fans as all roads lead to the Princess Hotel tomorrow evening for the Caribbean Fury 2 International Boxing card.
Six years ago Carwyn Holland paved the way for Gwendolyn O’Neil to gain a ten-round unanimous decision over Kathy Rivers on home soil for the WIBA Light Heavyweight title that had been vacated by Jacqui Frazier-Lyde.
Come tomorrow evening, with the ESPN camera’s rolling, the tough talking 41-year-old O’Neil will again be showcasing her talent when she faces-off with Pamela London in the latest addition to the boxing fiesta.
O’Neil said just before the two fighters signed their contracts yesterday after a press conference at the Pegasus Hotel that she was not going into the ring to ‘Waltz’ with the 37-year-old London but to demolish her and leave.
The experienced O’Neil has scored knockouts in 7 of her 16 wins and also has 6 defeats and a draw in her 23 fights while the younger London has won 6, lost 4 and drawn 1 of her 11 fights and judging from the heated cross talk yesterday, an action-packed fight is anticipated between the two ‘big’ girls.
The younger, lighter girls will also have their time to shine when 29-year-old World Bantamweight female Boxing Champion Guyana’s Shondell ‘Mystery lady’ matches gloves with 24-year-old Colombian Light Flyweight Olga ‘La Mona’ Julio in a 6-round clash.
The 29-year-old Alfred, who has won 12 and lost 5 of her 17 fights, has knocked out 4 of her opponents and this will be her first action in the ring since beating Corinne ‘Sexy Panther’ Van Ryck DeGroot in June for the World Title.
Alfred, the daughter of former professional Boxer Cecil Alfred, views tomorrow’s engagement as a warm-up for bigger things and promises a clinical performance against her Spanish opponent.
After an absence of eight months due to a hand injury the 31-year-old Guyanese World Number 5 ranked Leon Moore returns to the ring to fight Venezuelan Breilor Teran in a 10-round contest which will headline the night’s event.
‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton and fellow Guyanese Rawl Frank, who now campaigns out of the USA, will also do battle in an 8-round fight and Frank said it was a wonderful experience to be back home and returning to action here.
Mitchell Rogers and Theophelous King match skills over 6 rounds, Trinidadian Joel McRae fights James Walcott also over 6 rounds, Mark Murray battles Canadian Richard Reittie in a 4-rounder and Guyanese Clive Atwell who now lives in Dominica, takes on Errol Trotman over 4 rounds.
The bell for the first fight will ring at 20:00hrs but fans have been promised pulsating entertainment from as early as 19:00hrs when some of Guyana hottest upcoming singers provide a concert while will be followed by renditions for Guyana’s Jomo and the late Michael Jackson’s niece Tanay Jackson, who will perform at Half Time.
Jackson may have died, but he left a legacy and a rising star in Tanay, the daughter of his brother Tito. Tanay appeared in several of his music videos and is one of the hottest rising stars in the USA.
According to Holland’s Entertainment Tanay’s mother is Guyanese and tomorrow will be like a home-coming party for her.
