The 2010 Tenelec Inc 50 Overs First Division tournament organised by the Berbice Cricket Board has reached the semifinal stages and four of the ancient county’s teams have qualified for that stage. Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets qualified as the leader in Group B with 4 wins and a tie, while Albion goes through as the runner up with 4 wins and one defeat. In Zone A, West Berbice is the winner with Bermine as the runner up.
The final three matches of the round robin stage were played on Sunday last to decide the semifinalists. Edinburgh and West Berbice recorded victories while Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets and Port Mourant played to a historic tie.
At the Area “H” ground, Rose Hall Town batted first against Port Mourant and rattled up 235 for 9 off their allotted 45 overs with Renwick Batson 49, Clinton Pestano 36, Dominic Rikhi 55, Jason Sinclair 36 and Royston Crandon 40 being the principal scorers.
Bowling for the visitors, Steven Latcha claimed 4 wickets for 35 (8 overs), Andre Percival 2 for 53 (9) and Baldeo Persaud 2 for 31 (5). Port Mourant in reply reached 235 for 8 at the end of their 45 overs with the veteran Percival hitting an elegant 58 (4×4, 4×6), Moshin Perkhan 41, Steven Latcha 45 and all rounder Yogindra Harrinarine 27 not out.
Leg spinner Shawn Perreira was Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets most successful bowler with 3 for 43 from 9 overs while Esuan Crandon, Renwick Batson, Eon Hooper and Royston Crandon claimed one each. Each team received a point for the tied match.
West Berbice secured the top position in Group A when they crushed Young Warriors by 8 wickets at the Cumberland ground. Young Warriors batting first were restricted to 112 all out in 29 overs with only Richard Ramdeen offering any resistance to the West Berbice bowling trio of Sherwin Mc Pherson 4 for 42 (7), Krisendat Ramoo 3 for 4 (10) and Keyron Fraser 2 for 30 (6). In response West Berbice reached 113 for 2 in 30 overs with Arthley Bailey 50 not out and Andrew Dennis 30.
Left arm spinners Anil Beharry and Richard Ramdeen took a wicket each for the home team who were knocked out of the tournament. At the Edinburgh Ground, the home team crushed Blairmont by 6 wickets but failed to advance to the semifinals. Batting first, Blairmont were skittled out for 129 in 32.3 overs with Romain Boodram 27, Denwari Prashad 23 and Keon De Putron 23 not out being the only batsmen to reach double figures as Michael Sampson 4 for 23 (8), Raid Ally 3 for 35 (9) and H. Yadram 3 for 15 (8.3) bowled well. Edinburgh cruised to victory ending on 130 for 4 of 19.1 overs. Raid Ally performed with the bat to score an elegant 52 (7×4, 2×6) and E. Nelson 51 (6×4, 2×6) as only Nedesh Basdeo 2 for 38 off 5 overs bowled well for the visitors.
The semifinals would be played on Saturday with Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets playing Bermine at the Area “H” Ground and West Berbice hosting Albion at the Blairmont ground.
