…as army hosts Coast Guard Day
Under the theme “Transforming for continued service”, the Guyana Defence Force GDF on Monday last kick started its planned month of activities in honour of its 45th anniversary.
On Tuesday the coast guards hosted an exhibition at the coast guard headquarters, Ramp Road, Ruimveldt.
According to Commander Gary Beaton, the exhibition was orchestrated with the aim of “showcasing what we do, how we do it and the resources used to carry out the duties”.
On exhibit were the Guyana Defence Force ship GDFS Essequibo, insignia, military uniforms, life jackets, communication Gadgets, special knots and much more interesting resources of the military department.
The GDFS Essequibo was the highlighted exhibit for the day. Persons were allowed the opportunity to take a tour of the ship which was bought from the Royal Navy in 2001. It was a converted minesweeper. The ship is fully equipped with all necessary safety and defensive equipment along with the “usual ship accessories”
Beaton stated that though the exhibition was only for a day it is now expected to be hosted on an annual basis.
Special invitees were students of selected secondary schools, University of Guyana Faculty of Technology and the Guyana Technical Institute.
The commander noted that vacancies are available for all interested persons. Training would be provided; persons who are technically qualified are also encouraged to join the coast guard crew since the “opportunities are endless”.
