Fatal accidents are too frequent

Drivers simply need to be more careful on our roadways. Like any other object, a vehicle is potentially a weapon. As drivers, it is our responsibility to ensure that lives are not put in danger as a result our being behind the wheel of a car.
When taking the driver’s licence test, one of the first things we learn is just how crucial it is for us to be cautious drivers. From day one of the lessons, this is drilled into us by our instructors. The number of accidents in this country, and the frequency at which they occur is more than alarming, they warrant utter condemnation.
Two fatal accidents on the same road in the space of a day; 12 persons killed in a bus/truck smashup; when will these drivers realise that reckless driving kills? It is just as solid a fact that accidents on our roadways are avoidable, as the fact speed kills! Something must be done to better this situation. These drivers must be held accountable. The sadistic nature of a serial killer is revealed in the way he stalks and kills his victim individually, but what are we to make of a reckless driver who chooses willing to drive under the influence, or speeds, knowing that an “accident” is likely to happen, that may kill or cause severe injuries to passengers and possibly themselves?
Reference should be made here to the Norton Street accident a couple of weeks ago, where that now dead driver’s bus toppled as a consequence of speeding. Is it the thrill that comes from speeding? Is it a rush that only alcohol can provide? Or do these drivers gain a sense of dominance and control from knowing that other people’s lives are in their hands? Surely, it cannot be that hard to be a cautious driver?
Too many accidents have already occurred.  The lives lost are already one too many. We cannot afford another accident in which another single life will be senselessly lost or jeopardized. The heart of this problem is the mindset of the drivers when behind the wheel of a vehicle. It is only with them that these accidents can be avoided. Changes have to be made. This must stop now.
