Thirty-three-year-old Kurt Mason and 24-year- old Shonette Eastman, a shopkeeper, of 534 Canvas City, Wismar, Linden, yesterday, appeared before Magistrate Fazil Azeez at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charges of possession of a fire arm, without being a holder of a firearm licence; possession of ammunitions, without being a holder of a licence and two counts of trafficking in narcotics.
It is alleged that on October 30, last, the defendants were illegally in possession of one .45 semi automatic pistol, 17 live .45 rounds of ammunition and 450 grams of narcotics.
The defendants, who were represented by attorney at law Trenton Lake, pleaded not guilty to the four charges. The lawyer in a bail application told the court that his clients are not flight risk and they have no previous convictions.
Lake said that Eastman is a mother of two and Mason, a father of one, thus the Magistrate should grant bail.
The lawyer added that his clients are multiple occupants of the same home, thus the case should be treated as “special”
However, Police prosecutor Lionel Harvey, objected to bail on the grounds of the evidence against the defendants.
Harvey said that on the day in question, the police conducted a raid search after Eastman permitted the police to enter the house. He said that drugs and ammunitions were unearthed in the kitchen and the firearm was found in a bedroom.
Harvey added that the defendants are cousins and they were the only occupants in the home at the time; hence the charge.
The Magistrate refused bail and the defendants are to make their next court appearance on December 3.
