It was drama at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday when Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry found 38-year-old Cleveland London, of West Ruimveldt, guilty of assaulting the mother of his child, and sentenced him to three months in jail.
When the charge was read to him, London pleaded guilty and stood motionless. He appeared quite nervous.
As the Magistrate sentenced the accused, the man slumped in the dock and burst in tears shaking his head all the while.
An elderly woman who was crying in the court, was overheard cautioning the VC that she should have told the Magistrate “she don’t want no story.”
The allegation was that on Sunday, last, Candace Barrington, who is the mother of London’s son, visited the man to return the child who lives with him. While there, London pleaded with the woman to give him another chance in a relationship. The woman declined and explained to London that they could only be friends. The man became angry and dealt her several cuffs to her face.
The matter was reported to the police and London was arrested and charge.
As the woman stood in court to give evidence against the defendant, her eye was black and blue, which she later disguised with a pair of dark sunglasses.
