– after beating Memorex XI in DCMCO S/ball final
Wolf Warriors maintained their supremacy in local softball cricket by beating Memorex XI of Berbice in almost darkness at the DCC ground in Sunday’s final of the District of Columbia Metro Organisation (DCMCO) 15-over round hand knockout Countrywide Softball cricket Tournament.
The 130-team competition was organized by The Guyana Softball League in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. Wolf Warriors were also the champions in the first two tournaments in 2008 and 2009.
Devenand Persaud (3-15 from 3 overs) registered a hat-trick as the Berbicians were restricted to 124-7 when their 15 overs expired, despite a belligerent 15-ball 36 from Bhanutram in the closing stages of the innings.
Wolf Warriors romped to 127-5 with 5 overs to spare although a few quick wickets in the middle overs from Berbice hard-ball Inter-County batsman Ranga Latchanna (3-23) temporarily stalled their progress after Azad Azeez had scored a confident 43.
Wolf’s Warriors won the toss, invited Memorex XI to bat in sultry conditions and soon justified that decision by running out the dangerous Roy Jafferally (5) with just 7 runs on the board.
Latchanna got going with a straight six off Mohan Dhanpaul and along with Farouk Hassan took the score to 31 before Dhanraj got one to skid through and Hassan (16) and had his off stump knocked back. David Looknauth pushed the ball into gaps and kept the score ‘ticking over’ while Latchanna turned singles into twos and kept challenging the fielders with aggressive running between the wickets as the bowlers ‘kept things’ tight.
After clobbering two successive sixes Looknauth was caught at long-off for 27 to trigger a collapse as Persaud removed Looknauth, Latchanna and Suresh Michael with consecutive balls with the score on 96.
Bhanutram ensured the visitors reached a three-figure total with his aggressive knock to somewhat repair the damage caused by Persaud who captured the ‘best bowler in the final’ prize of $10,000 and a trophy.
Wolf’s Warriors, once again the best team in the competition, started their reply in positive fashion with Azeez in particular being severe on the bowlers; dumping 5 sixes in the first 4 overs as the two-times defending champs galloped to 45.
After Azeez was taken at long off, Amrit Jairam and left-hander Safraz Karim continued to clobber the bowling to all parts of the ground before a flurry of wickets from Latchanna stemmed the flow of run.
However, the tournament’s MVP, Ameer Nizamuddin finished unbeaten on 29 to ensure a hat-trick of title for his team.
Wolf’s Warriors collected $150,000 and a beautiful trophy while Memorex XI collected $75,000 and a trophy.
The best bowler and best batsman in the final each received $10,000 and a trophy while the eight zone winners each received a trophy.
Representing the district of Columbia Metro Cricket Organization, Milton Pyle said his organization was pleased to be associated with the competition which saw 130 teams participating. He also promised to ensure the competition continues to be held annually.
Guyana’s Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony attended the Final and met both teams before the start of play.
Dr Anthony expressed delight in seeing two female teams (from Capoey of Essequibo and Mahaica Creek) participating in an exhibition match which was won by Capoey Warriors.
