Dear Editor,
The Guyana and Guatemala November 17 International clash in Georgia, Atlanta is a welcome upliftment for the National Football Team.
The Georgia encounter will represent the second outing for a National Football Team on United States soil, since the Los Angeles debacle in December 1987 when 14 members of the Terrence Archer led squad disappeared before the Olympic qualifier against Mexico resulting in Guyana suffering a 9 Nil humiliation.
The 14 abscondees were Rupert Gordon, Trevor Maxwell, Anthony Bowen, Terrence George, Elson Hinckson, Ingram Halley, Adrian Forde, Nigel Cummings, Broderick Murray, Colin Pollard, Gerald Williams, David Kistoo, Neil Ochoa and Shawn Williams.
This tragedy left the Michael Atherley led G.F.A in the red with FIFA resulting in Guyana being suspended from the inaugural 1989 Shell Caribbean Cup championship. So the million dollar question being asked is whether the Local Stars in the Golden Jags line up will be forgiven for their predecessors lack of patriotism or the Golden Arrowhead will be represented only by the foreign Jags only time will tell?
The only time Guatemala and the land of the Mighty Kaieteur Falls clashed was October 1987 in Guatemala City when the host won both Olympic qualifiers six nil and 3 nil.
The National Team was:
Terrence Archer (Captain) – Pele
Rupert Gordon (Vice Captain) – Western Tigers
