The stage is set for the final and decisive leg of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship this Sunday, at the South Dakota Circuit.
With all the thorough preparations that are being made to machines, motor racing fans are assured of a fascinating battle for country and individual honours in what looks set to top the 30,00 plus spectators that attended the Bushy Park Meet in Barbados.
According to a source, all the teams are coming with their strongest contingents so fans will have a full day of thrills and hopefully little spills. Teams will be coming from Barbados, Jamaica, Canada, the USA, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
With the country and individual title races poised for a close finish, the three countries in contention to win the title have named quite formidable contingents.
Host Guyana leads the country standings with 124 points followed by Jamaica on 118 and Barbados in the cellar on 83, while Jamaica’s David Summerbell Jr leads the individual race on 56 points and he is followed by Guyana’s Kevin Jeffrey with 44, while another Jamaican Peter Rae and Guyanese Paul Vieira has 42 and 34 points respectively.
Barbados will be fielding the largest unit for the visiting teams and they will have competitors coming to compete in both the Group 4 and 2 categories, while Jamaica will be led by defending champion David Summerbell Jnr and also includes Doug ‘Hollywood’ Gore and Peter Rae.
To add to the anticipated excitement, the Caribbean Series now includes the Group 2A Division and this category is usually heavily subscribed so fans could expect a lot of keen competition among the competitors from the respective countries.
Guyana will be hoping to immediately stamp its authority in this lower category.
However, the battle for supremacy among the Group 4 cars should steal the spotlight, especially in light of the fact that the Caribbean title held by Summerbell jr. is at stake.
It is expected that the Maloney clan that includes father Doug and Mark along with Roger Mayers in his Ford Focus will lead the Bajans charge.
The locals’ mission to defend home turf rest on the shoulders of the experienced Andrew King, who though mathematically is out of contention to win the individual title could still prove crucial in the race for the country crown.
Kevin Jeffrey currently second in the Caribbean Series, Paul and Mark Vieira and Shawn King should offer vital support to guarantee that Guyana captures the Caribbean title.
In the Superbike category, Canada-based Kevin Graham, who has dominated the two earlier legs will be keen to continue his supremacy, but Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’, Maurice Menezes, Carlos Rodrigues in addition to Jamaica’s Stephan Chin and Halquin Rodney and Bajans Arthur Cumberbatch and Brook Miller will be aiming to break that control.
However, the rivalry anticipated should be enough to keep the fans on their seat’s edge all day.
The go-karts and 125cc motor bikes as always are exciting to watch and it should not be anything different this time around.
Motor racing fans have much in store to look forward to and are asked to show up in their thousands to watch a day of breathtaking stuff, especially in the Caribbean Series which looks set for an enthralling closure.
