Omawattie Suknandan, a Public Health employee, is peeved at the recent treatment meted out to her son, seven-year-old Kumar Suknandan (who was recently involved in an accident) by a doctor, a Cuban National.
The woman claims that although the doctor was advised by nurses to have her son remain in hospital for observation, the child was discharged within 24 hours. The Public Health employee, who is currently attached to the Suddie Hospital, is questioning the early release.
The child was struck down on the Suddie Public Road one week ago.
“His face continues to show signs of swelling and he cries out for pains in both his hip and face,” Omawattie Suknandan said.
She argued that because of those complications and her son not being issued with a medical clearance, she is reluctant to send him back to school at present.
The frustrated nurse said that she will not allow her son to attend school, without him being furthered examined by a doctor to properly ascertain the cause of the swelling to his face.
“I am not certain what is causing the swelling in my son’s head, but he needs a head scan which my family cannot afford. Head injuries are serious and I am scared that my son could be seriously affected later in his life.”
The nurse said that she continues to receive similar advice from her colleagues who are offering moral support to both her son and family. According to Nurse Suknandan, her son was on a pedestrian crossing on the Suddie Public Road, when he was struck down by minibus (number given).
The woman said that her family is also questioning the law enforcement officers as to the purpose of the pedestrian crossing sign, since the driver had stopped at the sign to allow a passenger off. She also claimed that a police rank was at the time on the scene.
Suknandan said she was alerted about her son’s accident while at work on Thursday, last (October 28). She said that she rushed out to see who had gotten hit, after hearing the distinct impact of a vehicle.
She said at the scene she was later confronted by the disturbing sight of her son lying helpless on the Suddie Public Road, before being assisted by the driver to the hospital.
Omawattie Suknandan said that her son only received two stitches to the head but he had lacerations to both his face and hip. He was treated by the doctor and sent away.
The child’s father, Perry, said he is also concerned about the after effects that the injury will have on his son, since his face continues to swell.
“I should not have to be the one to run behind the police in order to seek justice for my son,” he told this newspaper.
The angry father noted that the Police have failed to institute a charge against the driver to date.
