David Khan made a refreshing return to the top rankings when he edged past Learie Webster to secure his first win of the year and cart off the honours in the Topco Juices Senior Chess Qualifier when action in that tournament concluded at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street Georgetown, over the past weekend.
Indeed the Khan/Webster showdown ended in Khan’s favour but with both players tied on 7 points apiece, the organizers had to resort to the Sonneborn-Berger tiebreaker system to separate the two players. In the end Khan, with the better average, prevailed.
Earlier, Webster, who was the frontrunner for championship honours, suffered a crucial defeat to Errol Tiwari in his final game but still managed to finish the tournament at the number two spot while Errol Tiwari took the final podium position.
Subsequently, the following players have all qualified for the National Chess Championship: David Khan, Learie Webster, Errol Tiwari, Kriskal Persaud, Ron Motilall, Frankie Farley and Taffin Khan.
These players will battle for the national senior championship currently held by Wendell Meusa. The tournament would be played in a double round robin format and is scheduled to get underway within two weeks.
Meanwhile, Suhai Feng who played excellently in the first half of the tournament, faded into oblivion after suffering two consecutive losses to David Khan and Ron Motilall respectively. Reigning junior champion, Ron Motilall is the lone junior to qualify.
The final points standing reads; David Khan and Learie Webster (7), Errol Tiwari (6 1/2), Kriskal Persaud and Ron Motilall (6 points apiece), Frankie Farley (5 1/2), Taffin Khan, Shiv Nandalall, Loris Nathoo, Ryan Singh, Suhai Feng, Glenford Corlette and Carlos Petterson (5 points apiece), Raan Motilall (4 1/2), Alexander Duncan and Daryll Calistro (4 points apiece), Michael Pereira, Videsh Shameer and Nowrattan Persaud ended in the cellar on 31/2 points each.
The tournament was sponsored by DDL under the Topco Juices Brand.
