Cops release alleged ‘trigger man’

Citing doubts about the testimony of an alleged eyewitness, police have released the man suspected of gunning down Guyana Power and Light security boss, Clifford Peters, last year.
The suspect, known as ‘Johnny’ was picked out of a police lineup a few days ago. However, a police official told Kaieteur News that the alleged eyewitness, said to be a former GPL employee, had failed to pick out the same suspect during a previous identification parade.
Investigators are seeking legal advice to ascertain whether he will be charged.
According to a source, the suspect that the eyewitness claimed was the trigger man, has previous arrests, including one for attempted murder.
Police, acting on information, arrested him outside a bar at the corner of Haley and Bent Streets.
Peters, of Essequibo Street, Lamaha Springs (Joint Services Housing Scheme) was shot dead on May 4, 2009, while accompanying a GPL crew to Lamaha Park squatting area to remove illegal electricity connections.
The crew was attacked by two armed men, and one of them shot him in the neck, chest and about his body.
The killers escaped with Peters’s licensed revolver.
Two suspects were charged with his murder but were subsequently freed.
