A man yesterday rode out of a rum shop into the path of a vehicle and despite efforts by the driver to avoid the collision the ‘drunk’ was still struck.
The driver of the vehicle told this newspaper that while proceeding along Lusignan back road on the East Coast of Demerara around 14:30 hours he barely noticed a man on a bicycle riding “vigorously out of a rum shop” and swerving straight into his vehicle.
The impact damaged the left side of his vehicle’s windshield and front number plate.
A public spirited citizen, James Jagnarine, who was a passerby, witnessed the accident and rendered a helping hand.
Jagnarine said that he recognized the unconscious man, then assisted the driver in placing him into the vehicle. He said that he accompanied the driver along with the injured individual to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. The injured man remained unconscious throughout the ordeal and was admitted immediately.
Jagnarine stated, “I don’t know him personally but he always drinking in that shop and he been drinking today, he drunk…He just ride out of the shop, onto the road and the car pick he up.”
The driver of the vehicle did not receive any injuries nevertheless he stated that he is emotionally broken at what happened.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver is assisting the Police with investigations.
